KRAF-KIT: Malaysian Traditional Craft DIY Experience Box
ABSTRACT
Malaysian traditional crafts such as batik, songket, rattan weaving, Labu Sayong, and wood carving represent the country’s rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship. However, younger generations and modern consumers may have limited opportunities to experience and understand traditional craft-making processes. KRAF-KIT: Malaysian Traditional Craft DIY Experience Box is proposed as an innovative educational and commercial product that transforms traditional craft activities into simple, accessible, and engaging do-it-yourself (DIY) experiences.
Each KRAF-KIT contains selected materials, basic tools, step-by-step instructions, and activities inspired by Malaysian traditional craft techniques. The product can be developed into several collections, including the Batik Painting Kit, Mini Songket Weaving Kit, Rattan Weaving Kit, Labu Sayong Decorating Kit, and Malaysian Woodcraft Design Kit. The kits are designed for children, students, families, tourists, schools, museums, and creative workshops.
The innovation combines cultural heritage, creative education, entrepreneurship, and experiential learning within a marketable product. Through the Business Model Canvas (BMC), KRAF-KIT identifies multiple customer segments, distribution channels, strategic partners, revenue streams, and opportunities for collaboration with local craft artisans. The business model can generate revenue through individual kit sales, school packages, workshops, tourism packages, corporate programmes, and customised gift sets.
KRAF-KIT aims not only to sell a product but also to create a hands-on cultural experience that encourages consumers to learn, create, appreciate, and support Malaysian traditional crafts. The proposed innovation has the potential to strengthen cultural awareness, create new market opportunities for local artisans, encourage creative entrepreneurship, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of Malaysia’s traditional craft heritage.
